Chamari Athapaththu

If women’s cricket had a synonym for fearless, it would be Chamari Athapaththu. Known for her blistering strokes and ability to single-handedly change the course of a game, Chamari is more than just Sri Lanka’s captain, as she is their heartbeat.

With over 3,000 ODI runs, three T20I centuries, nine ODI hundreds, and countless match-winning knocks, she is easily the most decorated batter Sri Lanka has ever produced. Her 178 not out against Australia in the 2017 World Cup still echoes as one of the greatest innings in women’s cricket history.

A left-handed opener who thrives against pace and spin alike, she bats with a mix of brute power and elegant timing. Whether lofting bowlers over extra cover or whipping through midwicket, she carries an aura of inevitability once set.

Beyond batting, she is also a handy off-spinner, often breaking partnerships with her clever flight and control. Her greatest strength is fearlessness, whether chasing 300-plus or taking on the world’s best.

She made her debut in 2009 as a teenager, raw but determined, and scored her maiden ODI century against Ireland in 2011. In the 2013 World Cup, she played a quickfire fifty against England that helped secure a historic upset. Four years later, the world sat up and took notice when she demolished Australia with 178 not out at Bristol, a knock where she scored nearly 70% of her team’s runs.

She added to her legacy with a 113-run T20I knock against Australia in 2019, followed by a string of hundreds against Pakistan and New Zealand in 2022-23, which also lifted her to the No. 1 spot in ICC’s ODI batting rankings - the first Sri Lankan woman to achieve it.

In 2024, she produced arguably her greatest masterpiece, an unbeaten 195 in a chase against South Africa, leading Sri Lanka to their highest-ever successful run chase. Later that year, she powered her team to their first-ever Asia Cup title, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.

Chamari’s reputation goes beyond Sri Lanka. She was the first woman from her country to feature in franchise cricket, making her mark in England’s Super League, Australia’s Big Bash, and the Caribbean Premier League.

Her most memorable season came with Sydney Thunder in WBBL 09, where she piled up 511 runs, took nine wickets, and was named Player of the Tournament. From Melbourne to Abu Dhabi, she has carried her fearless style everywhere, earning fans across continents.

Her list of accolades is long, including ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year, multiple ICC Player of the Month awards, and even a seating zone named after her at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Chamari Bay.

Chamari Athapaththu is not just a captain or a record-holder, as she is the face of Sri Lankan women’s cricket. Now, as she leads her country into the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Chamari stands not just as a player but as a symbol of belief.
