'He's going to repeat those feats consistently over the next few years': Ashwin wants India teammate to 'cross barriers'

R Ashwin, who added another feather to his Test cap during the first India-Sri Lanka Test in Mohali, gave an interesting opinion on one of his teammates.

Star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was just one wicket away from scripting a new world record. After scoring an unbeaten 175 in the first innings of the Mohali Test against Sri Lanka last week and bagging 9 wickets in the match, the left-hander could have become the first player in the history of the game to score more than 150 runs in an innings back 10 wickets in the same match. His teammate R Ashwin is all praise for him and says this is the first of many.

Jadeja's long-term dream in Test cricket, as disclosed to a news media organisation, was to score a century and pick up a five-wicket haul in the same innings. Ashwin, who surpassed Kapil Dev to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests in the same match, quipped he was left surprised to see Jadeja take this long to achieve this feat.

“To think about the fact that Jadeja's first hundred and five-wicket accumulation in a Test match came only now is a matter of surprise for me because the way he has gone about his business and the kind of pedigree he carries.

"I am sure that is not going to be the first one and the last one we see. I am sure he is going to repeat those feats consistently over the next few years and I really do wish to see Jadeja cross barriers and barriers,” explained Ashwin.

India defeated the Lankans by a whopping inning and 222 runs on Rohit Sharma's captaincy debut to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. The second match, a day-night encounter, will begin at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, March 12.
