Mendis, 23, was injured while playing in a domestic game and is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

The unorthodox finger spinner was declared Man-of-the-Series in his debut test series against India in July-August, taking 26 wickets at 18.38 runs apiece in three games.

Sri Lanka have called-up left-arm spinner Rangana Herath as the replacement for the series starting on December 26.
