Strauss watched England hit 327-8 and then reduce Ireland to 111-5 at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium to set up a position from which few teams could lose a one-day international.
But as its long-suffering fans know, England is not any team. O'Brien hit the tournament's quickest ever hundred off just 50 balls to wrest the initiative from England, with the supposedly superior side unable to cope with the Irishman's big hitting.
Strauss now has to raise his side for Sunday's game against title hopeful South Africa and says O'Brien's innings "was pretty brutal."
