Tiwari embraces son, seeks ticket for nephew
Putting an end to a legal battle by accepting a young man’s claim that he was his biological son, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari is now eyeing the Nainital parliamentary constituency not for himself but for his nephew Manishi Tiwari.
Tiwari will be reaching Haldwani, located in the Nainital Lok Sabha segment, on Tuesday and will be touring the area for the next three to four days. Sources in the Congress say Tiwari had been eyeing the Nainital Lok Sabha seat for long.
A senior Samajwadi Party leader disclosed to the Hindustan Times that Tiwari had even asked the party a ticket for his nephew for the Nainital parliamentary constituency, a request that Mulayam Singh never entertained.
“A number of political leaders cutting across party lines are supporters of Tiwari,” said Ganesh Upadhyay, a senior Congress leader.
Tiwari will meet his followers across the constituency. His supporters are upbeat about his visit. Interestingly, none other than cabinet minister Indra Hridyesh, considered Tiwari’s supporter will welcome him at Haldwani.
“I don’t have details as to how long will he stay here. But definitely he has done more than enough for the development of the area and therefore he has a solid base here,” said Hridyesh, who is also the Haldwani MLA.
However, Tiwari in the past had said that he was above political ambitions and supports the cause of ‘development’. Nonetheless chances are that he might field his nephew Manishi — either as an independent or from some other party including the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP).
“Tiwari is mulling every option. But yes, first we will prefer to remain at home (Congress) and if nothing works out then we will plan out strategy accordingly,” said a staunch Tiwari supporter who did wished to be named.
In December 2009 a sex tape allegedly showing Tiwari with two women in a compromising position paved the way for the ouster of this octogenarian leader from active public life. Soon, Tiwari was embroiled in the paternity issue with a boy named Rohit Shekhar.
Tiwari had been the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and also a Union minister.
