The Uttarakhand government is set to sign an agreement with industrial units in the state guaranteeing 24-hour power supply, with a clause for penalty to be paid by the state if it fails to deliver.
Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) managing director SS Yadav said the move was a confidence-building exercise to attract additional investment in the state by ensuring round-the-clock power supply for industries. He expressed confidence that the state had sufficient capacity to meet the demand.
“We need only two million units extra power daily to fulfil the demands of industries, which will not be a problem. Out power grid system is stable and has enough potential to hold on to its commitment and needs,” said Yadav.
With the construction of three new power grids — 400 KV on the Bareilly-Kashipur power line, 220 KV grid stations each at Piran Kaliyar in Haridwar and Baram Joljivi in Pithoragarh — Yadav said the state’s available power will be enhanced further. Also, an additional 400 KV supply from the Srinagar-based JVK Hydropower Project is expected to start in the next one and half months.
Yadav also announced that the UPCL decided to waive off Rs 180 crore late-payment penalty for domestic users and consumers categorised as tube-well users, mainly farmers. According to the managing director, almost 5.33 lakh consumers defaulted on their electricity bill payments to the tune of Rs 383.47 crore till March 31, 2015.
