Vikram Rawat was elected as the new state president of Uttarakhand Youth Congress here on Saturday.
Vikram, 32, son of Ranjit Rawat, defeated Gurpreet Singh of Haldwani by 2,579 votes in the organizational polls. He got 10,752 votes against 8,173 votes cast in Gurpreet’s favour.
Vikram, who joined the state Youth Congress in 2010, was currently serving as the state Youth Congress vice president. He had contested for the presidential post in 2013 also, but couldn’t win the elections.
Congratulating Vikram for his election to the president’s post, Uttarakhand Youth Congress’ Twitter handle stated, “We are certain that your passion and enthusiasm will further strengthen the Congress Party’s vision in the state of Uttarakhand.”
Speaking on his plans and strategy, Vikram said, “My primary objective would be to add as many youths as possible to make the organization more strong.”
“I would work for the organisation by contributing whatever I can. As the president of youth wing, I would raise the issues related to youth and add as many of them as possible, so as to work together for the organisation. Other vital strategies are yet to be discussed after I would sit with other organisation leaders and members,” he added.
According to sources in the party, Gurpreet, who hails from Haldwani, was supported by the state Congress unit president Pritam Singh and the state Congress stalwart and Haldwani MLA, Indira Hridayesh.
