A 40-year-old man was killed after being run over by an allegedly speeding vehicle near a police check post in north-east Delhi’s Wazirabad late on Thursday night.

People who claimed to been on the spot at the time of the accident alleged the victim was chased by a traffic policeman on foot and was being dragged by his collar in the middle of the road when he was run over.

The police, however, denied the allegations saying prima facie it appeared that the accident occurred on the opposite carriageway, not on which teams from the local police and traffic police were conducting the checks.

“There is no reason why a traffic policeman would stop a pedestrian on the opposite carriageway. On the face of it, the allegations appear unfounded, but we will probe all possibilities and not discount any allegations,” SBS Tyagi, joint CP (traffic operations), told HT.

The dead man was later identified as Uttam Nagar resident Sushil Kumar Mishra, said AK Singla, DCP (north-east). The officer said he was in the transport business and owned a few three-wheelers.

The accident occurred on the Wazirabad Bridge around midnight. On the Wazirabad-Khajuri Khas carriageway, a team each from the local and traffic police were conducting entry permit checks of vehicles.

Hassan said he was passing by on a motorcycle when he noticed a traffic policeman pulling Mishra by his collar on the other carriageway.

“There were three traffic policemen. One of them ran to the opposite road to catch the man and drag him by his collar when a Tata Champion (a mini truck) ran over him. The policemen fled the spot after that,” Hassan said.

Mishra’s head was crushed in the accident and he died on the spot. Police have claimed that two calls were received at the control room in this connection.

“One call was by a traffic policeman. The other call was by a passerby who claimed that the man was run over while being beaten by a group of policemen. But when questioned later, that caller said his allegations were based on hearsay,” said Tyagi.
