After hitting a motorcycle in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur Extension on Sunday night, a truck driver got off his vehicle and took a closer look at the accident victims - the body of one of whom was cut in three pieces and the other victim was writhing in pain - before walking away from the spot.

While one of the bikers died on the spot, the other succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The men, Umesh Sharma and Sanjay Singh, worked in the hospitality sector in the city and lived together in south Delhi’s Sultanpur, said police. While Umesh, 25, was a chef at a hotel in Nehru Place, 26-year-old Sanjay was a food supervisor at a banquet hall in Kapashera.

They were riding a motorcycle while returning from work around 11.15 pm on Sunday when the accident happened in front of Nanda Medical Centre in Chhatarpur. The truck first hit an Uber cab that was ferrying passengers from Saket to Chhatarpur.

“I was driving through a traffic junction when the truck suddenly appeared out of nowhere and rammed my cab,” said Shameem, the cab driver. Even as Shameem was thrown off his seat, injuring his waist, the truck went on to hit a motorcycle which the two victims were riding. The two men were dragged for over 40 metres before the truck came to a stop.

A police team soon arrived at the scene and rushed the victims to a nearby hospital. But the effort was not enough to save the lives of the two motorcyclists. The police also found all the three vehicles involved in the accident at the spot itself.

The accused driver has been identified as Ram Nandan Yadav, a resident of Supaul in Bihar. The abandoned truck’s registration number helped the police track and arrest him. He has been booked for causing death by negligence, causing hurt by a dangerous act and rash driving.
