Police claim to have cracked the robbery case in Janakpuri on March 8, during which the victim woman was dragged by her saree for nearly 50 metres by two snatchers on a motorcycle, and on Saturday arrested a 33-year-old woman and her male friend for the crime. Police said the woman posed a man to carry out the robbery, adding that the couple was allegedly known as Bunty-Babli.

The victim, a 53-year-old school owner, had sustained injuries on her chest, thigh and shoulders in the incident, which was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the area. Police said the CCTV footage helped them conclude that the pillion motorcycle rider dragging the victim was a woman and not a man.

The arrested persons have been identified as Ramanjeet Kaur and her friend, Ramneek Singh, 24, said Monika Bhardwaj, deputy commissioner of police (west).

In the robbery on March 8, they had allegedly targeted the school owner who was in Janakpuri A-3 block to attend a programme on the International Women’s Day.

“The woman held her purse and was dragged on the road until the robbers managed to escape with her bag,” the DCP said. The CCTV footage had emerged soon after the crime and it showed two suspects on a motorcycle, but their faces weren’t visible as the two were wearing helmets, she said.

The police finally zeroed in on Kaur and arrested her from Vikaspuri along with Singh. The scooter they were riding was also found to be a stolen one. The stolen purse has been recovered, the officer said.

After the interrogation of the arrested duo, Bhardwaj said that the woman snatcher preferred to dress in a manly fashion to mislead investigators.

Kaur’s husband was in jail for the last five years for murder.
