Fire in furniture godown in Delhi’s Kirari, 8 tenders on spot

Forty-three died, mostly young migrant labourers, and 16 others were injured in the devastating fire that ripped through the illegal factory in Anaj Mandi early on Saturday.

A fire broke out in a furniture godown in outer north Delhi’s Kirari village on Tuesday, days after 43 workers were killed in a massive blaze in an illegal factory in Anaj Mandi area of the Capital, officials said.

The fire department got a call about the fire in the furniture godown spread in an area of about 300 square yards, officials said. The godown is a three-story building, they added.

“Eight fire tenders have been sent to the spot. Since it is wood that is on fire, it will take time to control the situation. It is not a massive fire so far. No one believed to be injured or trapped inside,” Delhi Fire Service’s chief Atul Garg said.

It was the worst blaze in 20 years that exposed shoddy city planning and lax enforcement of fire safety rules in the Capital.

They have said in their chargesheet that there was no firefighting equipment, panic alarms, accessible emergency exit, or any other safety measures at the building.
