Hijra Habba: Here’s how these talented transgenders showcased their talent

The third gender showcased their talent at the recently organised hijra haaba, an annual event organised by a Delhi-based NGO.

More than 400 transgenders, from across India, gathered in Delhi recently, to show what they have got. And Delhiites couldn’t help but cheer their talent.

To the beats of high-octane music, when transgenders danced, Capital witnessed a never before sight at the fifth edition of Hijra Habba — organised by a Delhi-based NGO, HIV/AIDS Alliance.

This event that took place in Select Citywalk, Saket, aims to build confidence among the transgenders, and spread awareness about their rights. “When we started this concept in India, there were only a few transgender representatives. For example, Gauri Sawant from Mumbai. But now there are at least 5-6 representatives in each state. This platform helps them build confidence, to not hide their identity, and come out openly. We are also pushing the government to pass the transgender bill,” says Sonal Mehta, executive director, of the NGO.

Yogeshwar Sharma, CEO, Select Citywalk, says , “This is our privilege to host such a wonderful event. Transgenders should not be treated differently and its a good platform to promote the same. People here are taking selfies with them, that should be the attitude.”

What caught attention was the presence of contestants from the pagent, Miss Transqueen India 2017, organised last month. “A lot of people have asked for a selfie with me. I’m feeling like a part of the society,” says Nikki, a transwoman contestant from the contest.

Rashmi Arora, an IT professional from the audience, says, “I’m speechless. They all look so beautiful. When my daughter asked me who they are? I told her, they are one among us. I believe, initiatives like these should be organised more regularly.”
