Rs 5.5 lakh in fake notes seized, cops say gang pushed Rs 3 crore fake currencies this year

The seizure comes in the wake of a similar case in Delhi last month when the special cell had recovered Rs6.6 lakh worth of fake notes. The gang had allegedly floated fake currency worth Rs 2 crore in the market.

All the notes were of Rs2,000 denomination and many notes bore similar serial numbers, said Pramod Kushwaha, DCP (special cell). “The gang has confessed to pushing in fake currencies of face value Rs3 crore ever since the supply resumed earlier this year,” the DCP added.

The seizure comes in the wake of a similar case in Delhi last month when the special cell had recovered Rs6.6 lakh worth of fake notes. The gang had allegedly floated fake currency worth Rs 2 crore in the market.

The similarities in the two seizures were also in the denomination and the quality of the notes. Police have claimed that these notes have features like watermark and a security thread incorporated into them, indicating that the criminals have been able to replicate most of the security features.

The latest arrests were made near New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday after the special cell received a tip-off that the gang members would be assembling outside the building of Railway Quarters on Thomson Road near the railway station.

The DCP said that the gang procured these notes through the porous borders in Bangladesh and Nepal. Allegedly manufactured in Pakistan, the fake currencies would be thrown into India over the wired fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh borders, particularly in West Bengal’s Malda district. The accused men would allegedly buy the fake currency at the rate of Rs 600 per note and sell them for Rs 1,000.
