SC collegium recommends five lawyers for appointment as Delhi high court judges

The names recommended by the SC collegium for appointment as HC judges are: Senior advocates Jyoti Singh, Anup Jairam Bhambhani and Manoj Kumar Ohri, central government standing counsel Sanjeev Narula, and advocates Prateek Jalan.

The Delhi High Court may soon get new judges with the Supreme Court collegium recommending appointment of five lawyers. The high court has been facing a shortage of judges, following retirements in the last few months.

The names recommended by the SC collegium for appointment as HC judges are: Senior advocates Jyoti Singh, Anup Jairam Bhambhani and Manoj Kumar Ohri, central government standing counsel Sanjeev Narula, and advocates Prateek Jalan.

The collegium said after scrutinising the material placed and also including the observation made by the Department of Justice, these five names should be elevated as judges of the Delhi High Court.

The Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal on October 13, 2017 had sent nine names to the SC collegium comprising of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Madan B Lokur.

Of the nine names, five were recommended by the collegium, which if approved by the Centre would take the strength of the judges in the Delhi High Court to 38 against a sanctioned strength of 60.

“The proposal in respect of Saurabh Kirpal and Sanjoy Ghose, advocates, would be taken up for consideration by the collegium after some time,” it said.
