Ashish Dahiya, the trainee IAS officer, who drowned in the city pool on Monday, was among over two dozen young officers who had gathered for a poolside party. Police said the 30-year-old trainee officer died while allegedly trying to save a drowning woman colleague at the pool of the Foreign Service Institute in south Delhi’s Ber Sarai, where the party was on.

The incident took place around midnight when most of the officers had left. A woman Indian Revenue Service officer allegedly slipped into the 10-foot-deep pool and some of the officers jumped in and rescued her. The woman noticed that Dahiya, who too had helped her out, was missing and alerted others. They then spotted Dahiya floating the water with his face down. Attempts were made to revive him but he was pronounced dead at a Vasant Kunj hospital at 12.30am.
