A truck carrying buffaloes overturned near south Delhi’s Hauz Khas metro station around 3 am on Thursday, leaving two of them dead and four injured. The accident also led to massive traffic snarls on the Outer Ring Road during the morning rush hour as the buffaloes remained on the roadside for hours.

Chinmoy Biswal, Additional DCP (South), said the truck driver and others in the damaged vehicle fled the spot after the accident. “The truck bears a Gujarat registration number, but we are yet to find out where it was coming from and if the animals were being transported legally,” said Biswal.

The accident happened right opposite Laxman Public School in Hauz Khas. A few workers from the school were seen managing around a dozen buffaloes till late on Thursday morning before the civic agency officials could reach the spot.

Prima facie it appears that the truck driver was unable to negotiate a sharp turn because of which the truck overturned. The accident resulted in a part of the road getting blocked resulting in slow traffic.

As the day progressed, the snarls got worse. Traffic and police officers reached the spot and tried to make space for the vehicles passing by, but it was not enough to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on the road.

According to the police, the animals were being removed and the injured taken to veterinary hospital.
