Two illegal arms suppliers nabbed in Delhi, 50 pistols and 2 carbines recovered

While one arms dealer was arrested in north Delhi’s Dheerpur on Monday, the second was nabbed from GT Karnal Road on Wednesday.

The arrest of two different arms suppliers from the city has led to the recovery of 50 pistols and two carbines, the Delhi Police’s special cell said on Thursday.

One of these suspects allegedly smuggled arms from West Bengal to Delhi in trains. Police said he escaped police radar by boarding and alighting the train at the outskirts of the cities when the train slowed down.

The first of these two arrests was made in north Delhi’s Dheerpur on Monday, said Sanjeev Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell).

“This racket was under our technical and human surveillance. On Monday, we received a tip-off that a member of this gang would hand over a large cache of arms to his contact. We laid a trap in Dheerpur,” said the DCP.

The suspect, Mohd Azimuddin Sheikh, was allegedly found carrying two trolley bags. He was nabbed and a search of his bags produced two carbines, 38 pistols and 50 cartridges which were hidden in clothes and a newspaper, said the DCP.

Sheikh told the police about his regular receiver in Delhi and said he was in the illegal arms business for the last five years.

Police said Soyyam was a carrier for a gang in Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana which smuggled guns into the national Capital.

Police said the receiver in the first case and the supplier in the second have been identified and efforts are on to nab them.
