NEW DELHI: Damaged and missing reflective signages on major roads in Delhi are confusing commuters. In some places these are absent and at other spots these have been broken for years.

With no clear sign boards to direct them, vehicles often take turns at the last minute, causing accidents, commuters said.

The signboard near south Delhi’s Savitri Flyover (Outer Ring Road), indicating a right turn to Greater Kailash-II, has been missing for more than three months. Commuters here either take a last-minute right turn or a U-turn from the Nehru Place flyover.

“People are forced to manoeuvre vehicles at their own risk. Those going to GK II for the first time often get confused. They drive in the wrong direction to take a right turn towards GK II,” said Chetan Sharma, chairman of Federation of GK-2 RWAs.

“We spoke to PWD officials but despite their assurance, no action has been taken to erect new sign boards on outer ring road,” he added.

“Their condition puts a question mark on the maintenance. In many places, pillars are rusted and damaged. These should be maintained after every rainy season,” said JS Saluja, president of Sarita Vihar Harit Kranti, an NGO.

The signage at the entrance of Hauz Khas village road is upside down. “It has been like that for more than a year. It can fall on anyone, anytime,” said a resident.

A senior PWD official said: “These overhead signages are stolen during odd hours. We filed complaints with police but nothing happened. We generally install new signages within two to three weeks.”
