Sushilkumar Shinde was visiting Russia when four busloads of Jat protesters not only entered his Krishna Menon Marg residence in the high-security zone of the Capital but also tried to ransack it.

On his return on April 13, Shinde asked additional secretary Khurshid Ganai to look into failure of the Delhi Police to act though they knew of the protesters' plan.

Ganai has a week to submit his report and there is a strong possibility that some heads may role.

The Delhi Police, unlike other state forces, are directly under the home ministry.

The probe comes at a time when three secretary-level officials have been short-listed to succeed home secretary RK Singh, who like Kumar, retires on June 30.

The minister is not too happy with Singh also, as his press statements have landed the government in a spot on more than one occasion.

There is talk of 1977-batch UT cadre officer Bhim Sain Bassi succeeding Kumar, though latter is unlikely to be removed as he has only two months of service left.

It is learnt that one of the short-listed officers will be appointed as officer on special duty at the end of this month to succeed Singh.

The three secretaries are PK Sinha (shipping), Anil Goswami (social justice) and DRS Chaudhary (steel).

The front runner of the home secretary's job appears to be 1977-batch Madhya Pradesh cadre officer Dileep Chaudhary.
