"At present, it is difficult to say which of the trucks are on duty as it is not easy to identify them. Once the vehicles are painted in uniform colours and numbers, the sanitation staff can ensure which truck is plying on which road," said a senior official of the corporation. The logo of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) will be painted on them.

The corporation owns 67 trucks and hires 50 more trucks on rent. For more efficient garbage removal, it has decided to procure 70 more trucks. They have already placed an order for 30 trucks to the manufacturer, Ashok Leyland. Orders for the remaining 40 will be placed by the end of this year.

"The company will deliver the 30 new trucks by the end of December. Many existing trucks are old and will be gradually replaced by the new trucks," said a senior corporation official.

With the procurement of the new trucks, the total vehicles in east Delhi will be around 190 that will be used to collect garbage from 64 wards. Since the area predominantly consists of unauthorised colonies, where narrow bylanes make it impossible for trucks to ply, the corporation also employs about 100 auto-tippers.

The corporation has decided to start a sanitation drive from October 22 to prepare the streets and colonies for the festival season.
