India on Friday said it was looking forward to work with the new Iraqi Government to "revive and intensify" the relations between the two countries as their junior foreign ministers met here in the first high-level contact in several years.

Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Majeed Abbawi met Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed in New Delhi and discussed several issues.
Abbawi's visit is the first high-level meeting between the two Foreign Ministries in several years.
While welcoming the formation of the new Government in Iraq, Ahamed conveyed to his counterpart that India looks forward to working with the Government of Iraq to revive and intensify the traditionally close and friendly relations between India and Iraq.
"India stands committed to support the emergence of a strong, free, democratic, pluralistic, federal and unified Iraq, to assist the Iraqi Government and its people to overcome the many challenges that remain," Ahamed told the visiting deputy foreign minister.
He also noted that India has remained all along ready to respond to the urgent needs of economic reconstruction of Iraq.
