The body of an infant girl was found near a drain in north Delhi’s Nathupura area on Friday morning, police have said.
The body of the three-month-old girl was found lying near a drain in lane No. 10 in Nathupura’s D block, the police said.
A police officer said the incident came to light after some children who were playing in the lane saw dogs around the body of a baby. The children immediately raised an alarm and told people in the neighbourhood about the matter.
“Local residents reached the spot and shooed away the dogs before one of them made a call to the police control room. A police team reached the spot and took away the body of the infant. We have registered a case and the body has been preserved at the mortuary of a government hospital in north Delhi for 72 hours,” the police officer said, adding they are trying to trace the parents of the baby.
“The child’s body will be preserved for identification for three days, even though it seems like a deliberate case of abandonment to conceal birth. Usually, none of these bodies are claimed by the general public,” the officer added.
Some of the local residents alleged that the local police took the incident casually as the police team reached the spot almost an hour after the call was made to the police control room. A senior police officer, however, refuted the allegations, saying no delay was made on their part while responding to the call.
