According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the 3.0 intensity quake had its epicentre at the Baghpat-Meerut border, about 40 km from Delhi that did not feel any impact. The tremors were recorded at 10.42 pm on Monday.

"The quake measured 3.0 on Richter scale. The intensity was very low so no effect was experienced in the national capital as such," an IMD official said.

He added that no damage of life or property had been reported.

Located in zone IV of seismic activity, Delhi is in a high danger zone.

"The Gangetic plains are located at plate boundary between Eurasian and Indian plates. This is a continuous process happening for the last 50 million years," the official said.

"There is no system to predict future earthquakes."

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in 2000-09, earthquakes accounted for nearly 60 percent of deaths by disasters.
