At 9:30 pm when the victim, later identified as 23-year-old Sushil Kumar Gupta, reached the Ghazipur flyover.

"His friend Rahul was riding pillion on the motorcycle and they were heading to Ghaziabad when Gupta apparently failed to spot a stationary canter parked on one side of the flyover and rammed it from behind," said a senior police officer.

According to eyewitnesses, police claimed, the accident occurred when Gupta got a phone call while ascending the flyover.

Without stopping the vehicle, Gupta allegedly took out his phone and balanced between his right ear and shoulder as he took the phone call.

"Since his head was tilted at an angle which didn’t allow him a proper view of the left side of the carriageway, Gupta lost his balance as panicked upon spotting the heavy vehicle metres away from his speeding bike," the officer said.

Rahul, however, was fortunate and was rushed to the Pushpanjali Hospital where he is recovering.

Meanwhile, a family residing in east Delhi's Anand Vihar was injured while returning home during a high-speed collision that was reported from a mall located some distance away from their residence around midnight.

"Rajender Singh was going home with his family in a Ford Fiesta vehicle when a speeding Honda City rammed it near the EDM at high speed," said a police officer.

According to police, the family, which included Singh’s wife and two children, was on its way from the Bhopura area when the collision occurred.

Sources said liquor bottles were recovered from the speeding Honda City but senior officers refused to confirm the same.
