A bitter marital discord, which apparently triggered Dr Jagriti Singh’s aggressive streak, probably came about from her husband BSP MP Dhananjay Singh’s insecurity with her potential political career, the police claimed.

Citing Jagriti’s questioning, police officers associated with investigations into the murder of 35-year-old maid Rakhi Bhadra said the BSP MP Dhananjay Singh’s wife had gradually become prone to aggression as a latent reaction to her husband’s attempts at severing ties with her for “seemingly being better at his job”.

“According to Jagriti, her husband Dhananjay Singh had initially encouraged her political career but later realised that this could become his own undoing for some reason,” said a police officer.

Jagriti had also fought an election from Jaunpur’s Rari — which had previously belonged to her father-in-law — as an independent candidate but had lost.

This seeming act of defiance, according to the police, coupled with instigation from his father had pushed Dhananjay to severe ties with her by filing for divorce at the Patiala House district courts in August this year.

“In fact, according to her, she once had a confrontation over the issue of the said seat with her father-in-law once,” the officer said.

In his divorce petition, Dhananjay Singh had alleged being beaten up by Jagriti on several occasions in addition to her assaults on his 80-year-old father and one of his female relatives, Radhika.

Meanwhile, police sources said the couple’s three-year-old son had refused to meet his mother when he was taken to the Chanakyapuri police station, where the couple is currently lodged.

Senior Delhi police officers said the couple had been shifted to the jail’s lock-ups after initially having been lodged at a rest room.

Dev Kumar, the placement agent who allegedly helped traffic Rakhi Bhadra and Meena to the couple’s residence, is yet to be traced.
