Concerned over the increasing number of accidents, Haryana government will consider the proposal of hefty fines. According to the new proposal, penalties of Rs 100 would now be more than Rs 500.

“It is important to tighten the noose around traffic rules violators. Hefty fine will ensure that people will avoid breaking rules. In other countries, there are hefty fines for minor violations and the drivers don't break rule because of that," Gurgaon deputy commissioner Rajendra Kataria said.

According to the new bill, all traffic violations will invite a heavy penalty. Source present at the meeting said increased fines for over-speeding, jumping red lights, wrong parking or driving without licence might be in place by December end to bring about traffic discipline in the city.

For commercial vehicles, the proposed penalty is even higher. According to the new bill, overspeeding trucks, buses and cabs would be fined R2,000.

"The aim is to reduce the number of accidents and bring traffic sense among the commuters. Rs 100 is so less that commuters don't mind breaking the law," the officer said.

Since August 2009 up till September 15, 2010, 690 accidents occurred on Gurgaon roads, which 274 died and 700 were injured.
