Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday put the onus of resolving the impasse in Parliament over the setting up of a joint parliamentary committee to probe the 2G spectrum scam back on the Opposition.
On a day the NDA held a rally in the Capital demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh either agrees to the JPC demand or quit, Mukherjee, addressing a CNN-IBN awards function, offered to call a special session of Parliament before the budget session to debate whether a JPC should be set up.
The government-Opposition stand-off persisted through the winter session, with hardly any business transacted.
"Let the issue be debated on the floor of Parliament. I am ready to call a special session of Parliament. Let this issue be debated before the public - whether there is need for a JPC," Mukherjee said.
He said he was sad that the entire session had been washed out, and hoped the next one wouldn't meet the same fate.
"We shouldn't do anything to destroy institutions," he said.
