A five-member committee is probing an allegation against a doctor of the MCD's Hindu Rao Hospital for calling a private doctor to assist him in a surgery without informing anyone. The committee, headed by the medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Madhu Kurasia, will submit the inquiry report on Wednesday.

The 82-year-old patient, Meharban Pawar, who was suffering from gall bladder cancer, was first operated upon on February 12. Later, he complained of difficulty in passing urine, for which he was again operated upon on March 16 for a blockage in the urinary tract.

According to sources in the hospital, the accused doctor called a private doctor from a nearby hospital for assistance, as he found the old man had developed severe pus in his right kidney that needed to be immediately removed.

The head of the department of surgery, who later came to know about the private doctor being inside the operation theater, complained against him to the authorities.

The accused doctor has been suspended till the inquiry result is out, and the removed kidney has been sent for lab testing to check its condition. However, the health department of the MCD is not probing it as a kidney theft case.
