Public transport will continue to be the government’s priority in the new financial year. Addressing the legislators on the opening day of budget session, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna said public transport system has to improve significantly for the majority of the population to adopt it as the preferred mode of transport.

“With the introduction of the modern metro rail system, modern fleet of low-floor buses and new roads and flyovers, public transport system in Delhi has undergone a paradigm shift,” Khanna said.

“This will be sustained for a longer period with the adoption of latest technologies and a suitable policy environment favouring safe and comfortable public transport system,” he added.

“The bus cluster system in one part of the city is likely to commence operations soon, which would another 4,400 buses to the existing fleet,” Khanna added.

Khanna also highlighted the government’s achievements in education, public works, environment, power, tourism and social sectors. He also talked about the successful hosting of Commonwealth Games. “We have demonstrated to the world our ability to organise and manage a mega event like the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“The growth has to be inclusive to uplift the marginalised sections of the population. The launch of Samajik Suvidha Sangam is a step in this direction,” he said.
