The incident took place at the house of one Praveen Kumar (39) in Laxmi Nagar area on Diwali evening. According to the police, Kumar and family were celebrating at Diwali at a relative’s house, when the thieves struck.

The incident came to light when Kumar asked his sister Simran to light diyas (earthen lamps) at their house. She found the locks broken and alerted Kumar, who then informed the police.

“The house was ransacked. Almost all almirahs were opened and we lost cash and jewellery,” said Kumar.

According to the complainant, cash worth around Rs 39 lakh and jewellery worth around Rs 11 lakh were missing. Kumar had recently sold one of his properties and kept around Rs 39 lakh in cash at home to buy a new shop.
