Sharma, the alleged hired killer, was sentenced to life imprisonment on March 24 for committing the murder in Shivani’s East Delhi apartment on January 23, 1999.

In his appeal, Sharma denied having any motive to kill Shivani, a journalist with The Indian Express. Stating that the trial court has held the IPS officer as the chief conspirator in the case, Sharma claimed it proved that he had no motive to kill her.

Sharma said that as per the prosecution evidence, the phone number which was allegedly used for plotting the crime belonged to one Rampal Sharma. He said the the trial court wrongly held him guilty.
