20-year-old killed, two injured as bike stunt goes wrong in south Delhi

Police officials say they are probing if the Hyosung and Dominar bikes were being used for stunts.

Stunt biking went horribly wrong on Sunday morning when two expensive motorcycles collided head-on, killing a 20-year-old rider and leaving two others badly injured in south Delhi’s Qutab Institutional Area.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the two sports bikes, a Dominar 400 and a Hyosung GT650R, were racing towards each other at speeds of over 100 km/hr, the stunt being to change tracks at the point of collision.

“But a dhaba owner’s scooter appeared on the scene suddenly, foiling their plan and leading to a massive collision. The three persons on the two motorcycles were flung away,” said Tanku, who works at a local dhaba near the accident spot.

The dead youth has been identified as Raman, an Uttam Nagar resident who was preparing to pursue a course in architecture. His family said he had been gifted a Bajaj Dominar 400 cc bike worth Rs 1.7 lakh about a month ago.

Though Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (south), confirmed to HT that Raman was a part of stunt bikers at the time of the accident, the deceased’s family vehemently refuted the allegations and said the youth was a victim and not into stunt biking.

The accident happened around 8.30 am on Sunday on a 20-feet wide road outside Fore School of Management in Qutab Institutional Area. People with businesses said stretch of road is notorious for stunt biking, particularly on Sundays.

Satish Pandey, a private security guard at an institute near the crime spot, said he saw the two motorcyclists head towards each other at full throttle from a distance of around 200 metres.

“The Hyosung bike had two riders and was travelling over 100 km/hr. The other motorcycle (Dominar) was coming from the other side. They were to change tracks at the point of collision. It was a part of a regular stunt these youths perform here,” said Pandey.

Used to witnessing these stunts from a safe distance, Pandey did not care to watch it anymore until a “blast kind of sound” drew his attention.

“The two motorcycles had been severely damaged. The three riders were lying severely injured. One of their legs had broken and was hanging when people lifted them to rush them to a hospital,” said Pandey, adding the helmet of the deceased had come off, causing him head injuries.

The injured were rushed to Rockland Hospital nearby. Raman succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The other two, identified as 27-year-old Charles Brian, and his friend, Pradeep Nair, continue to remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

Brian is a HR manager at a company in Gurgaon and Nair too works for a private firm. The police have registered a case of causing death by negligence, rash driving and causing hurt by act endangering the lives of others, said the additional DCP.
