With the Congress and the Samajwadi Party in a seat sharing dilemma, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said he was confident of striking a deal with the UPA’s lead party “very soon”.

Amid reports that he is likely to meet Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to resolve the issue, he said: “I have faith that we will arrive at a settlement.” Asked to comment on the reported Congress demand that 18 seats be given to it and five more seats where it can have a friendly fight with the SP, Yadav said: “when there is an alliance these issues are sorted out...”
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said the alliance hasn’t broken down. “SP was announcing its candidates for some constituencies and the Congress may also do so,” he said. Singh, however, admitted that there would be “friendly fight” between the two parties in some constituencies.
