The Union Urban Development Ministry is signing a reciprocal common agreement on transport for state carriages with the three National Capital Region (NCR) states on Thursday. Once signed, it will ensure free movement of buses of transport corporations and private players of one state to the other signatory states.

For the common people this means hassle free travelling and not having to suffer because of disputes between states over territory.

As of now, all the four stakeholders have bilateral agreement with each other on free movement of buses from one state to another. But there have been instances in the past when expiry of such agreements resulted in disruption of bus services.

The last time such a standoff happened was in November 2007 when UP and Delhi stopped buses entering into each other's territory, inconveniencing hapless commuters. The standoff was finally called off after six months.

“The agreement would ensure that a similar situation does not arise in future. It would institutionalise the system and ensure that there is no breakdown in the system,” said a government official involved with the issue.
