Transport dept to tighten noose around autos

Ever tried threatening an autorickshaw driver with a complaint for overcharging or refusal. In case you have, you perhaps also know that it does not really work. These vehicles are resold several times, and in many cases the transport department does not have correct address of the current owner.

The department is now planning to check the gap by making it mandatory that the original permit holder turns up for verification during the renewal of the fitness certificate of the vehicle.

According to Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, the process would allow the department to build a database of those who actually own these autorickshaws.

“The threat of a fine does not work because the challan usually reaches a fictitious address, or the original permit holder had sold his vehicle and moved on. Making it mandatory for the permit holder to turn up for verification will help us in identifying the real owners and their addresses,” said Lovely.
