While the Congress seems to be in a hurry to break MCD into three smaller units, ostensibly for better administration, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) warns that it may lead to greater chaos.
Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi said that several important issues such as property tax, toll tax, maintenance of facilities like drainage, roads and streetlights that would run from one corporation to another needed to be discussed and sorted out before a final decision on the trifurcation was taken.
“There are certain MCD zones that generate poor revenue while there are some that have a huge cash flow. How that money will be divided between the corporations and how a 1.5-lakh strong workforce will be distributed has to be put in place,” Abbi said.
With just five months to the municipal polls, Abbi along with Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta, leader of the house in MCD Subhash Arya and MCD standing committee chairperson listed the achievements of BJP’s five years in office and the challenges it faced.
Often criticised for poor maintenance of roads, Arya said the corporation got just R75 crore to maintenance the 27,153-kilometre long lanes of roads in the Capital while the public works department, which falls under the Delhi government, has set aside a budget of R300 crore to maintain 2,200-lanes of roads. “The fund that we get from the Centre through Delhi state is inadequate. The state government keeps most of it to itself,” Arya said.
