Customs officials arrested a Zambian air traveller for smuggling out drugs worth more than Rs 1 crore at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday.
According to officials, Phiri Eliajah (29), a citizen of Zambia, who had come to India on a tourist visa on July 2, was trying to smuggle 10 kg of narcotic drug called Methaqualon to Dubai when he was apprehended by CISF officials.
“The incident took place early on Saturday morning when a CISF check squad suspected the movement of the Zambian identified as Phiri Eliajah near Gate number 5 of terminal 3 of the IGIA. He was screened before he was allowed to enter the airport. The drug was recovered from his baggage. The estimated value of the drug is about R1 crore in the international market,” a customs official said.
