Letter to the Editor, Hindustan Times, New Delhi.

My congratulations on publishing on this auspicious day Gopal Gandhi’s brilliant article “As fallible as the rest of us”.
I have been a great admirer of Panditji: even since I first saw him in Simla where I went to school--it was during the Cripps Mission way back in 1942. He was on horseback and I was on foot. He romped past me cheerily acknowledging my greeting with a “Jai Hind”. Some years later, I heard him speak at an open air function in far away Rangoon--the place where I was born: I was in college in Bombay then and was visiting my parents during the vacation. Panditji spoke with such intensity and such disarming frankness that it has remained with me a memorable event in my life. I experienced that beneficial glow of being in the presence of the truly great--of having his “darshan”!
Ambassador Galbraith, a great friend of India, always used to say that darshan is sought for in all societies but only Indians ‘are candid enough to endow it with a name!”
