Just a few weeks after asking the University of Delhi to roll back its four-year-undergraduate programme, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has put three more universities under its scanner for running four year courses.
The UGC had written to Shiv Nadar University, Ambedkar University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, seeking an explanation on why they still had four year courses.
“We have got an explanation from all three of them. We will once again ask them for a detailed report. A committee of experts will look into the explanations and then decide accordingly,” a senior UGC official said.
Sources said that as per the explanations given, Ambedkar University said that they run a dual degree programme while IISc said their four year programme is a research degree. Shiv Nadar University, however, might be asked to follow a three-year degree programme.
Shiv Nadar University vice-chancellor Nikhil Sinha could not be contacted despite several attempts.
The UGC had on Friday written letters to more than 650 higher education institutions asking them to comply with the gazette notification of July 5.
