CBSE releases clarification amid confusion over marks for extra questions
CBSE has issued clarification on the marking of extra questions attempted by students. The marking scheme has been explained here.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has issued clarification on the marking of extra questions attempted by students. The official notice is available to candidates on the CBSE website at cbse.gov.in.
The Board has released the clarification after receiving queries from students who have obtained a scanned copy of their evaluated answer book, stating a total discrepancy between the calculation sheet in the answer book received and the marks shown as total marks obtained.
CBSE 3-language rule for Class 9 defies earlier decision
CBSE has now clarified that, because many internal choices are provided in the question papers, students answer more than the requisite number of questions. As a matter of policy, CBSE has always taken the best obtained marks by the candidate and mentioned the other question/subpart attempted as an Over Attempt. In such cases, the system is considering the better of the two marks for calculating the result. Such marks, which were not considered, are shown as a star-marked asterisk (*).
To make students understand the marking system, the Board has also shared an example which is available on the official notice.

The portal for applying for verification of issues observed in the supplied scanned copy of the answer book and re-evaluation of answers has been made active on June 2 and will close on June 6, 2026. This facility can only be availed by the students who have obtained a scanned copy of their evaluated answer book(s).
The fee structure is ₹100/- per answer book for verification of issues observed in supplied scanned copies and ₹25/- per question for re-evaluation. The fee may be paid only through online modes such as UPI, Credit Card, Debit Card or Net Banking.
Students may apply online for the resolution of issues observed in the supplied scanned copy of the answer book, including missing pages, missing supplementary sheets, missing maps/graphs, blurred pages, incorrect answer book, or evaluation against a different set. Students may also apply online for re-evaluation of one or more questions across one or more subjects by providing the required details, including question number and page number, as the case may be.
CBSE has directed students to submit only one application each for verification of issues/ re-evaluation. For more related details candidates can check the official website of CBSE.
