The Modern Education Society, Pune, established the Doongarsee Gangjee Ruparel College, or D G Ruparel College, as it is popularly known, in 1952. Since 1976, the Government of Maharashtra decided to allow junior college classes (higher secondary classes) at the degree college, which is affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
From 1980 - 81, the University of Mumbai gave sanction for graduate classes in the faculty of commerce. In addition to these classes, the college is a centre for classes of graduate courses under the University of Mumbai’s Institute of Distance Education. D G Ruparel is also considered as a centre to conduct graduate programmes of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik, which has jurisdiction all over Maharashtra. The postgraduate courses of the University in Library Science and Business Administration are also held here.
For its consistent good performance, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded ‘A’ Grade to the college.
Studies and activities
The college offers courses in all the three streams — arts, science and commerce, though it’s best known for science programmes. It introduced various vocational courses at the + 2 stage in 1980. It also started undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in computer science and information technology.
In addition to academics, Ruparel College students are encouraged to take part in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Facilities are available for cricket, hockey, football and softball. Both male and female students can choose to join the NCC or the college literary societies. Literary activities in English, Marathi and Hindi are regularly held in the college. Students can also take up performing arts — theatre and music.

Classrooms boast of modern audio-visual aids including TV, VCR, overhead projectors, slide projector, film projectors and audio-video tapes. Other facilities are library, auditorium, and a computer centre. The college has a well-equipped gymkhana, which provides the necessary space and equipment for both indoor and outdoor sports with the ground being modified for specific sports. It also offers hostel facilities for male students.

The best part about the college is that the students receive a lot of encouragement for extra-curricular activities.
However, we sometimes feel that the college is too traditional and conservative in its outlook. No western events are allowed in our college festival, nor are other colleges invited to it.
It would be great if the rules regarding this were relaxed a bit
