A retail manager is responsible for managing the overall functioning of a store/department to meet a company’s customer service standards. The basic ­expectation from a retail manager is to drive sales and profitability by ‘delighting customers’ through expert service.

Depending on the size of the store and company structure, retail managers may also be required to deal with human resources, marketing, supply chain, information technology and finance.

The Indian retail industry is growing at a 25% compound annual growth rate. The country’s retail market is slated to grow by 50% to $675 billion by 2016 (from $470 billion in 2011), of which organised retail is expected to grow by 300% to $84 billion (from 26 billion in 2011).
