Eligibility test no longer mandatory for shiksha mitras

In a major relief for over 1.72 lakh shiksha mitras in Uttar Pradesh, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has withdrawn a clause that makes it mandatory for para teachers to clear the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET). Meanwhile, the UP government on Tuesday also filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the apex court seeking quashing of the Allahabad high court order through which the regularisation of 1.72 lakh teachers was cancelled.

The UP government is likely to inform the apex court about the NCTE order which was seen as a major hurdle in the appointment of shiksha mitras.

Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union HRD minister Smriti Irani and UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s assurances, uncertainty loomed over the teachers’ appointments, some of whom died due to heart attack after their regularisation was quashed.
