As the country gears up to host the Commonwealth Games, youngsters in the city are all ready to play their part as volunteers for the occasion. “It’s a matter of pride that the games are happening in our country and I’m really excited to be a part of the volunteer program,” says DU student Shivani Yadav.
A great chance
The chance to meet and escort the players is one of the reasons that is attracting students. “Though the authorities will take the final call on what duty we’ll be assigned, escorting the foreign players would be my first choice,” says Saloni Rai, second year student of SRCC. “I’m a sportsperson and it will be a great opportunity to meet and interact with these talented players,” says Uday Sandhu, who plays hockey and football for the Delhi University. And their are other attractions also. “Some are also attracted by the free uniform and food provided for the games,” Yadav adds.
Choice of students
Most of the girls would like to be at the hospitality and public relations desk. “This would be great as I have good communication skills and wouldn’t have to run around much,” says Suhani Kohli, third year student of Maths Honours at Jesus and Mary College.
The boys would like to be in the stadium at any cost, whether it is assisting the players or providing security. “I have opted to help as security and guide, as I know the city well,” says Inderdeep Singh, who is pursuing interior designing from JD Institute of Fashion Design. “Controlling the traffic in the simmering heat of Delhi or controlling the unruly crowd of the city are activities that I and my friends would definitely be hesitant of taking up,” says DU student Rai. “It wouldn’t help us build a rapport with the players,” adds her friend Raunak Chaman.

Entrance exams for final year students are the only concern. “The only hitch is competitive exams happening in December. So managing our time schedule is going to be a bit of a task,” says Nitin Gandhi, a second-year student of B. Com. “But I am going to participate, even if for a couple of days. We can choose the number of days and time shift according to our convenience,” he adds.
