India has become a full member of the Engineering Mobility Forum (EMF), formed by an international agreement between professional organisations, to facilitate global acceptance of engineers through the Institution of Engineers, India (IEI).
This took place at the International Engineers Meeting at Kyoto, Japan, on June 17, 2009. “With India getting full membership of the EMF, professional engineers from India, certified by the IEI, would now be able to practise as professional engineers in member countries without any additional checks applicable to their local professional engineers. Earlier only engineers from IITs and few other renowned engineering colleges in the country used to get jobs abroad,” said K O Thakare, President, IEI.
All eligible Indian engineers can apply for the professional engineer certification. The certification process involves assessment of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), passing the assessment examination and peer review. The emphasis is on CPD, which can be achieved through participation in seminars, and writing and presenting technical papers etc.
