This fact is likely to take you by surprise. For the 49,000 seats it offers to freshers, Delhi University has received a whopping 1.3 lakh admission forms. Tough competition, huh?
Now, hear this: Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) or IP University as it is commonly called has received a little over 1.6 lakh applications for roughly 14,800 seats this year.
Yes, the university — established just 10 years ago — is turning out to be a much-needed alternative to the institution founded way back in 1922. And the ones making good use of the alternative are outstation candidates.
The number of outstation applicants to courses like MBBS, BTech and MCA exceeds the number of aspirants from Delhi.
For the B.Tech/M.Tech (dual degree) course, for example, the university has got close to 33,000 applications from outsiders for just 670 seats that are set aside for them. MBA, BBA, BTech and BA (LLB) are among the other courses which are most sought after by this category.
So much so, that for many courses the number of outstation candidates is greater than candidates from Delhi.

“The interest of students from other states in IP University has increased tremendously. The number of applicants is a strong endorsement of this,” said Dilip K. Bandyopadhyay, vice chancellor, IP University.
“The relevance of our courses in the industry has led to such increased interest. Moreover, here we keep revising our curriculum every two years to ensure that it meets the meets of the market.”
“At DU there’s no one keeping a tab on the hours put in by a student. Several colleges affiliated to IP university lay a lot of emphasis on discipline and have a strict attendance system in place,” said Ravi K. Dhar, Director, Jagannath International Management School (JIMS).
“Some of us, our institute is a case in point, even keep in touch with parents of the outstation student and keep them posted on the child’s progress via SMS. Such care and attention is bound to make the university a preferred choice for many.”
