It’s business as usual

The Hindustan Times Best B-schools in India survey finds that despite the strides made by private institutions, government run or aided management schools still dominate the top 10 list

Around this time every year, millions of bright young — and not so young — minds step up efforts to gain entry into one of a handful of A-league business schools across the country.

But which schools are really the best? And how do various stakeholders — like alumni, recruiters and faculty — rate them?

Hindustan Times, in association with knowledge partner Ipsos Indica, now brings you a survey on Best B-schools in India that is more comprehensive than any other.

Why?

Because it ranks B-schools on 22 discrete parameters across five domains — learning experience, global exposure, resources & infrastructure, brand & marketability and quality of outcomes (see Methodology on Page 6 for details). No other survey is this

comprehensive.

The survey polled the three main stakeholders who contribute to the overall perception of a B-school’s ranking — faculty (at the level of deans or heads of departments), alumni and recruiters.

Then, the survey finds that despite the strides made by private institutions, the government run or aided schools still dominate the Top 10 list — only two privately run institutes make it to this list. That’s largely because of four IIMs and one IIT (Delhi).

However, the distribution evens out as one scrolls down the list. Nine of the Top 20 (or seven schools ranked between 11 and 20 ) are privately run.

Interestingly, the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, which many other surveys do not rank because it offers a one-year course, has come in at No 4.

While reporting on individual B-schools, HT came across several interesting findings.

The slowdown hasn’t had much impact on freshly minted MBAs from India’s top B-schools.

Yes, the pay cheques are a little slimmer than in the past; fewer graduates are bagging crore-plus salaries; plum foreign postings aren’t as numerous as they were; and entire batches of students are no longer landing jobs on the first day of the placement season.

But that’s the sum total of bad news. The rest of the news can be summed in three words: business as usual.
