In an open letter to Jamia Millia Islamia vice chancellor Talat Ahmad, students from the girls’ hostel have requested to do away with the 8pm deadline for entry to hostel and said that the hostel rules enforced by the university violate their fundamental rights.
Highlighting the differences in rules for boys and girls for hostel entry timings — boys can return by 10pm and if they are late they only have to make an entry while girls are not allowed to enter after 8 pm — the letter said, “This difference in the hostel rules is a clear violation of my Right to Equality bestowed to me in Article 15 of the Constitution which prohibits the state from discriminating any citizen on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.”
While pointing out that JMI is not the only university to have such gender biased rules, the students have requested the VC to do away with the 8pm deadline and with getting permissions from local guardians.
Recently, the university had issued a notice to inform students residing in the girls hostel that there would be no late nights –the provision under which girls students were allowed to return to hostel by 10 pm twice a month after getting written permission from their local guardians –allowed to the girls from this academic session.
