Ten years ago, after much opposition from Delhi University, Indraprastha College for Women (IP College) started the Bachelor's in Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC) programme. Now, the course is easily the college's most popular.
What is the criteria for admission?
Admission is a three-step process spread over 3 days:
June 20: A three-hour objective test of 100 marks on English and general awareness.
June 27: 276 students short listed for a creative ability test, answerable in Eng and Hindi.
July 2-3: Interviews
How is the course different from the courses offered by private institutes?
We give students theoretical knowledge in subjects like history and languages, so they get a solid academic background also. Students get hands-on media experience, as there are mandatory internships in the second and third years.
Are there placements after the course?
We have a placement cell in which companies come to recruit students. However, many students apply on their own and get jobs, because of the recognition of the degree by the industry.
How is the course different from journalism?
The course is more focused on mass communication than journalism, which means it covers more aspects of the media, like advertising, public relations, radio, and production.
Should a person first go for a bachelor's degree in a traditional course and then go for a degree in mass communication?
The course is meant to enable students to start working after their bachelor's. Our students are in the same position as students who do their bachelor's and then go to institutes like Jamia or Film and Telvision Institute.

So, why enter the media two years later?
We advise our students to work for two to three years after the course, and then go for a specialised degree.
How do I prepare for the exam?
We do not recommend any books to students, as we do not have any set syllabus for the exam. Students are given a test on general knowledge.
How tough is the course?
The course is very hectic. Media is a demanding field, and parents should prepare themselves to find their daughters coming home late at night.
What is the average salary after the course?
Most students start with Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000, and then gradually go on to earn more.
What sorts of jobs do students get after the course?
Most students get into production houses or become cinematographers. Many students want to become models and anchors, but they must know this is not what we will train them to be.
