A group of five students from a private school of Kota have topped the state-level National Children Science Congress (SNCSC) in Rajasthan and would now represent the state at Indian Science Congress (ISC), to be held next month. SNCSC is an annual program of the department of science and technology.
Bhuvnesh Kumar Sharma, project officer, department of science and technology, Kota, said 27 groups, each comprising a maximum of five students, were selected for the SNCSC held in Udaipur from December 5 to 6. They would now participate in the National Children’s Science Congress from December 25 to 31.
“A group of five students from Arcadia School of Kota have topped among 27 groups of students from different districts of Rajasthan in the SNCSC. Now, this group would represent Rajasthan at the ISC which would be held from January 3 to 7 in the next year, as only toppers get a chance to participate in the ISC from each state,” Sharma said.
Students under 17 years of age participate in the SNCSC. The toppers are Ashruti Sirvi, Janvi Saini and Jeevantika Saini of Class 10 and Alfiya Gauri and Akansha Yadav of Class 9 of Arcadia School. The group has topped for its research report on the topic “Climate Change Effect on Agriculture in Kota”. Bhanwar Singh, a guide teacher of the group, said the students prepared a 60-page report in which they studied the impact of climate change on agricultural activity in Kota. They visited four villages and interacted with over 12 farmers and some agricultural scientists.
Ashruti Sirvi said the group had disseminated information to the farmers about uses of drip irrigation system, rain water harvesting systems, organic fertilizers, deep ploughing methods and other measures to combat climate change. “We have also taken samples of the soil of the farmers’ fields and made a temporary farm at our school to study climate impact on agriculture,” she said.
